Grateful Eyes bright and keen in youth Mind full of artful mischief Ears that heard a mole whisper Feet so quick and spry Trying moments when woodland quests Took you far away from home Neighbor’s complaints, fences and collars Could not hold you A leash would snap in seconds To catch a garden thief Nothing safe from the hunter’s jaws Yet so gentle you were with children Even your own Jaws that crushed bone, I never feared Age brought changes You moved far away with me Freedom no longer your companion Morning and night we walked the dark roads You helped me see such beauty at dawn Now you rise and fall without dignity Legs once strong so weak beneath A frame still so full of love Yet ever loyal your heart is to mine Eyes sometimes blankly stare I wonder where your thoughts might wander To the woods where you run with deer Do you still catch moles in your dreams my love Or play again in fields wild and free I am grateful for everything you’ve given me Love beyond all measure, without bounds I know your time with me is coming to a close But I am grateful that somehow you found me That we’ve been granted these many years Your love rescued me time and again Devotion unmatched, laughter so rich Forever you will be by my side Amy L Crockett DVM 3/13/2011 For my Rosie |
